Jakarta sneaking up on KL?


The grass, it would seem, is always greener over the other side of the kali. Many Indonesians have the impression that we here in Jakarta is way behind our northern neighbor, Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia.

Are we? Here is Malaysian blogger S.K. Thew‘s reflections on an article written by The Star’s columnist and Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Wong Chun Wai. Both Thew and Wong, Unspun knows, has made regular visits to Jakarta for work and sometimes for fun.

  1. So Jakarta has some shopping malls selling expensive brands, so what? As long as the outrageously vast gulf continues to exist between those people in Jakarta who are buying Gucci loafers and TAG Heuer watches and those in the rest of the country who can barely afford to eat, let alone educate their children, then Indonesia will continue to be seen as a backward country; known for its instability and as a provider of desperate maids and cheap labour, no matter how many luxury apartments and shopping malls are built…
